Labour Councillor Jenny Churchill was demonstrating with parents who are demanding fair and sufficient funding for schools outside Richmond Council yesterday.
Councillor Churchill said
"Schools are operating close to the bone after six years of austerity. Now their problems have gotten much much worse. The Chancellor, motivated by secret fears over the economic cost of Brexit, is turning the screw even tighter. The national audit office estimates the cumulative real cut in school funding will be £3 billion by 2020. The proposed formula changes - which will hit neighbouring boroughs badly - come on top of this. Then there is the huge cut in the Educational Support Grant for local councils- money that pays for checking the criminal background of school staff, checking that schools are free from dangerous asbestos and other essential work. The impact on the children caught up in all this will be lifelong."
